This is what you can do if you have a vision of a radio in your mind's eye when you see what appears to be a "junker" set at that next swap meet or eBay session.

This radio started out looking like a real piece of junk with it's faded, splattered, ugly paint job and dirty exterior. It had no knobs and no price tag. Still, I saw that neat half-moon dial and the neat smooth shape that screamed "DECO". Best of all it was a metal set with a full covered rear panel and was an unknown brand, "ELEC-TONE", so it had to be mine.

I spied it sitting in the back of another collector's van at a swap meet last summer. When I asked him about it he said he was planning on restoring it but that he had just bought it from another collector at the meet and if I was interested in it to "make him an offer" We bantered about a bit and settled on a price that to me was more than I had planned on spending but less than I knew the set would be worth restored. I had an idea in my mind of what the set would look like done up in automotive finish to accent the dial with some eye-catching red knobs I knew were in my parts box at home.

The deal was struck and the restoration began...

THE "BEFORE" SHOT - WHAT WAS I THINKING !?
This is why many people think we radio collectors are a "bit off" when they see what we spend good hard earned money on...that is before they see the finished product! It didn't even surprise me when I opened the set up to do the chassis restoration that this radio had NO TUBES IN IT! It did however have the full chassis tube layout inside the rear cover so I had no problem finding the correct tubes to install and thus bring the radio back to it former glory with a full recapping and alignment. It played great, even receiving stations from hundreds of miles away during the evening hours. What a blast!
THE "AFTER" SHOT - 20 HOURS LATER AND LOTS OF T.L.C
The cabinet was refinished with four coats of Dupli-Color Chrysler Light Champagne metallic lacquer and two clearcoats to protect it while the 1/4 inch think lucite reverse engraved dial was polished out with MOTHER'S MAG polish. New grill cloth was provided from a trip to the local Goodwill for a "party dress" that had a sparkly reflective rayon material that accented the cabinet color, (a whole 50 cents for grill cloth, you gotta love it!)  A quick shot of Krylon Banner Red on the dial pointer backing disc as well as those new red knobs and Viola! The resurrected ELEC-TONE was complete, all except for the addition of a new ELEC-TONE logo decal which is still in the works, but it is a BIG change from where it started. NOW whaddaya think, eh?
